Medicare questions, answered

Do Medicare Advantage plans cover out of state?

You live in North Carolina, but life does not always stay inside state lines. A grandchild in Florida, a winter in Arizona, a specialist two states over. Whether your Medicare Advantage plan follows you depends on the plan type, the kind of care, and how long you stay away. Here is how it works.

Can I use my Medicare in another state?

Yes, for emergencies, and it depends for everything else. Original Medicare works the same in every state, because it is a federal program with no networks. Any doctor or hospital that accepts Medicare can treat you. Medicare Advantage is different. Each plan serves a specific area, usually a set of counties, and its network lives inside that area.

Emergencies are covered everywhere

Every Medicare Advantage plan must cover emergency and urgent care anywhere in the United States, with no prior authorization and no network restriction. That rule comes from federal law. If you end up in an emergency room out of state, the plan pays as if you were in network. Urgently needed care while you are temporarily away is covered the same way. Routine care is not.

Routine care: HMO vs PPO

For routine care, the plan type decides. An HMO generally covers only emergency and urgent care outside its service area, so a routine visit out of state usually comes out of your pocket. A PPO covers out-of-network care too, but you pay more for it, and the plan has a separate, higher out-of-pocket maximum for care outside the network. For 2027, CMS caps the combined in-network and out-of-network maximum for PPO plans at $14,800. Check your plan's Evidence of Coverage for the exact rules.

Travel benefits and visitor programs

Some plans offer a travel or visitor benefit that lets you see doctors in other areas for a limited time, often through a partner network. The details vary widely: some cover only certain regions, some limit which services count, and some charge more when you use them. Ask the plan what its travel benefit covers before you count on it, and get the answer in writing if the trip is long.

Staying away too long can end your plan

A Medicare Advantage plan can disenroll you if you leave its service area for more than six consecutive months without moving. Plans with a visitor or traveler program can extend that to twelve months. If you split the year between two states, this rule matters more than any single benefit. Original Medicare plus Medigap has no such limit, which is one reason frequent travelers often choose that path.

Moving is different from traveling

A permanent move out of your plan's service area is not a travel problem. It gives you a special enrollment period to join a new plan where you live, or return to Original Medicare with a Part D plan. Tell your current plan your new address, and enroll before the old coverage ends so there is no gap. Read what happens to my Medicare if I move to another state for the moving checklist.

What to check before a trip

Before a long trip, check three things: whether your plan has a travel benefit and what it covers, where the nearest in-network urgent care is at your destination, and how to reach the plan while you are away. Bring your member card and the plan's phone number. If you take prescriptions, make sure you can fill them at a pharmacy near where you are staying.

Questions people ask me about this

Can I use my Medicare Advantage plan in another state?

For emergencies and urgent care, yes, anywhere in the United States. For routine care, it depends on your plan type. HMO plans generally cover only emergency and urgent care outside their service area. PPO plans cover out-of-network care at higher cost sharing.

Does Original Medicare work out of state?

Yes. Original Medicare is federal and works the same in every state. Any doctor or hospital that accepts Medicare can treat you, with no network and no referral.

What if I spend winters in another state?

If you are away more than six consecutive months, your Medicare Advantage plan can disenroll you, unless it has a visitor program that extends the limit to twelve months. Check your plan's rules before the season starts.

Does my plan cover care outside the United States?

Original Medicare generally does not pay for care outside the United States, with only narrow exceptions. Some Medigap plans include a foreign travel emergency benefit. Check your coverage before you travel abroad.
